Learning Objectives

  • 1. Identify recent FDA drug communications, including but not limited to, labeling changes, warnings, new indications, new dosage forms, MedWatch alerts and CDC immunization schedules.

    2. Discuss thenew drugs with respect to their pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, approved and unapproved indications.

    3. Describe their adverse effects and drug interaction that may affect patient compliance.

    4. Compare efficacy, dosage and cost to existing agents.

    5. Discuss the patient oriented outcomes or evidence that may or may not exist for each of the new medications and when they may or may not be appropriate to recommend for selected patients.

    6. Compare pharmacotherapy outcomes vs cost/benefit between newly approved agents and existing or lower cost agents.

  • 1. Discuss why individuals with profound autism have reduced access to inpatient psychiatric hospitalization.

    2. Define polypharmacy.

    3. Identify three reasons for polypharmacy in people with profound autism.

    4. Apply deprescribing strategies to a clinical case example.

    5. Define diagnostic overshadowing and evaluate factors that may contribute to it using a clinical case example.

    6. Identify three common psychotropic side effects and assess how they contribute to aggression and self-injurious behaviors in people with intellectual disabilities.

    7. Distinguish between affective and mood lability and describe how those differences influence treatment planning.

    8. Describe the diagnostic and treatment differences of catatonia in people with and without an intellectual disability.

    9. Formulate a treatment plan for an individual with profound autism and excited catatonia

PHYSICIANS/ PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS: The AAFP has reviewed Therapeutic Update 2026 and deemed it acceptable for up to 15.00 Live AAFP Prescribed credit(s). Term of Approval is from 04/28/2026 to 12/31/2026. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award.  When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed, not as Category 1.  CME programs approved by the AAFP are eligible for Category 2 credit  (or Category 1-A  under special circumstances) through the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for Prescribed credit from AAFP. Physician assistants may report the number of hours stated above of Category I credit for completing this program.
