At the conclusion of this program, the participant will be able to:
1.Describe the key therapeutic goals of the 2022 Proposed CDC Recommendations/Guidelines for prescribing opioids for outpatients. 2. Describe the fundamental concepts of pain management, including definitions such as: a) addiction; b) tolerance; c) dependency; d) hyperalgesia; e) allodynia. 3. State key principles for assessing patients in pain, identifying risk factors and behaviors that are associated with opioid misuse, abuse, and addiction. 4. State examples of therapeutic options for managing pain, including nonpharmacologic options and pharmacologic (non-opioid and opioid analgesic) therapies. 5. Compare and contrast the risks and benefits for utilizing opioid therapy for acute and chronic pain and state how and when to follow-up when patients are prescribed opioid analgesics. 6. State the main characteristics of patients who would be identified as “high risk”, “moderate risk” and “low risk” for chronic opioid use. 7. State how to manage patients safely and effectively on opioid analgesics in the acute and chronic pain settings, including initiating therapy, titrating, and discontinuing use of opioid analgesics. 8. Compare and contrast basic pharmacology of: a) morphine; b) hydrocodone; c) hydromorphone; d) fentanyl; e) methadone; f) buprenorphine; g) tramadol; h) tapentadol. 9. Define a reasonable quantity of opioids to prescribe / dispense to a patient with acute pain and chronic non-cancer pain. 10. Describe how to counsel patients and caregivers regarding the safe use on naloxone for opioid overdose. 11. State key educational principles that should be applied to all patients and caregivers regarding the safe use of opioid analgesics, including, proper storage and disposal.

Nutrition and Weight Loss in Obesity and Diabetes-Part 1
At the conclusion of this program, the participant will be able to:
Food as Medicine: (2 hours) In this session we will review how the biochemistry of food and the effect of food on physiology. We will examine the phytochemistry and healing abilities of plants and animal tissues. 1. List foods that cause illness and disease. 2. Review the important food components that should be placed into the diet. 3. Correlate various fatty acids that can cause inflammation and those that are anti-inflammatory. 4. Describe why fiber is important to health and weight loss. 5. Identify foods and herbs with anti-inflammatory properties
GI and Pancreas Review (2 hrs.) In this session we will review the biochemistry and physiology of the GI tract and various points that may lead to weight gain or loss. We will review how the physiology affects the GI and pancreas in insulin and energy production. 6. Review the physiology of GI tract that regulates digestion, satiety and weight 7. Describe the physiology of pancreas and it’s connection to blood sugar regulation and digestion. 9. Explain how the microbiome plays a role in weight and blood sugar.
Various Diets: (1.0) In this session we will review various diets and examine the research on effectiveness in decreasing diabetes and obesity, as well as the effects and side effects. 10. List diets that have shown effectiveness in causing weight loss. 11. List diets with most effect on decreasing diabetes and pre-diabetes markers. . 12. Review the difficulty and side effects of diets.

At the conclusion of this program, the participant will be able to:
Review of Drugs used in Weight Loss (1.5 Hour) In this session we will briefly overview drugs used in weight loss, with the research on their effectiveness and their side effects. 1. Review glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. 2. List differences between GLP-1 and dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist.. 3. Analyze melanocortin 4 (MC4) receptor agonists. 4. Describe effects of fat blockers. 5. Review amphetamine like drugs and their side effect profile. 6. List other weight loss and diabetes/weight loss drugs.
Adrenal Stress and Weight Gain or weight loss (1.5 hr.) In this session we will review the role of stress in weight gain and weight loss. We will also review the vitamins and minerals needed for the adrenal pathways and various herbs and foods that may reduce cortisol and stress. 1. Review the biochemical pathways of the adrenal glands. 2. Describe how acute stress may cause weight loss and chronic stress may lead to diabetes and weight gain. 3. List integrative medicine techniques to reduce stress. 4. Discuss the role of the adrenal glands in blood sugar regulation. Supplements Role in Blood Sugar Regulation and Weight (1.5 hrs.) In this session we will discuss how vitamins and minerals play an important role in blood sugar management and weight loss. We will review studies on supplements and foods that can help with blood sugar and weight loss. 5. Discuss the role of vitamins and minerals in blood sugar regulation and weight management. 6. List foods that may help with blood sugar management and weight loss. 7. Explain the role of fatty acids in inflammation and weight management. Bringing Medications, Supplements, Nutrition and Coaching Together (.5 hrs.)
In this session we will review to put a diabetes and weight loss management program together using medications, supplements, nutritional consultations and coaching. 8. Describe how to select the correct medication for patients for diabetes and weight loss management. 9. Review how important digestion and microbiome is to weight and blood sugar management and what to do about them. 10. List integrative strategies that can be used for weight loss and diabetes management programs.
Dr. Gregory Holmquest
Dr. Holmquist received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the School of Pharmacy at the University of Washington in Seattle. He is a board certified Oncology Pharmacist, an American Medical Association Certified Educator for Physicians on Endof-Life Care, and an American Society of Pain Educators Certified Pain Educator (C.P.E.). As a clinician and educator, Dr. Holmquist’s philosophy of care is summarized in one core statement, “Making a difference in the lives of patients”

Dr. Lynn Lafferty is a Doctor of Pharmacy and licensed pharmacist, naturopath, herbalist, nutritionist, and chef who is committed to finding the safest and most effective means to promote health and wellness over disease and illness. She is and has been an Assistant Professor in the Integrative Medicine Department and graduate faculty in the Nutrition Program at Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine and is currently at Nova Southeastern College of Pharmacy in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

NURSE PRACTITIONERS/ NURSES: This course provides 15 contact hours (1.5 CEU) over three days, 5 hours per day, to fulfill the pharmacotherapeutics/ pharmacology requirements for American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Category 1 Continuing Education Hours for certification renewal. The same hours submitted to renew certification may be submitted to a State Board of Nursing for re-licensure. American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) accepts formally approved continuing education sponsored by organizations accredited or approved by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). .
PHYSICIANS: The AAFP has reviewed Current Topics in Healthcare 2023 and deemed it acceptable for up to 16.00 Live AAFP Prescribed credits. Term of Approval is from 09/13/2023 to 09/15/2023. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed, not as Category 1. CME programs approved by the AAFP are eligible for Category 2 credit (or Category 1-A under special circumstances) through the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS: American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for Prescribed credit from AAFP. Physician assistants may report the number of hours stated above of Category I credit for completing this program.
CONSULTANT PHARMACISTS: Some consultant pharmacist boards accept University Learning Systems courses for recertification either as is or with board approval. Please contact your board regarding course approval and ULS with any questions.
CANADIAN PHARMACISTS: Canadian Council on Continuing Education in Pharmacy (CCCEP) accepts courses accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). This credit is applicable to health professionals who may require pharmacology credit.
CANADIAN PHYSICIANS: Members of the College of Family Physicians of Canada are eligible to receive up to 15 MAINPRO-M1 credits for participation in this activity due to reciprocal agreement with the American Academy of Family Physicians.
