At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to: 1. Identify recent FDA drug communications, including but not limited to, labeling changes, warnings, new indications, new dosage forms and MedWatch alerts. 2. Discuss the new drugs with respect to their pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, approved and unapproved indications. 3. Describe their adverse effects and drug interaction that may affect patient compliance. 4. Compare efficacy, dosage and cost to existing agents. 5. Discuss the patient oriented outcomes or evidence that may or may not exist for each of the new medications and when they may or may not be appropriate to recommend for selected patients. 6. Compare pharmacotherapy outcomes vs cost/benefit between newly approved agents and existing or lower cost agents.

The Importance of Nutritional Consultations and Foods that cause diseases and Foods that may help disease: 1. Summarize the components of a nutritional consultation. 2. Review medical conditions for insurance reimbursement. 3. Describe why blood sugar stability is key to preventing diabetes and inflammation. 4. Discuss the evidence on which food ingredients may cause illness and which food components can heal tissues and biochemical abnomality.5. Review Research on food components that cause symptoms and diseases. 6. Discuss environmental causes of symptoms. 7. Discuss how to access and use literature on food research.
Review the Digestive System and evidence based herbal and food based remedies for supplementation therapy : 8. Review the physiology of upper and lower GI: tissues, cells, enzymes, tight junctions. 9. Define the importance of bile and pH in balancing the GI. 10. Review Phase 3 Detoxification that takes place in the G.I. 11. Identify how toxins, pathogens and diets cause GI dysfunction. 12. List foods with polysaccharides and how they can help with mucus tissues in the GI. 13. Identify research based herbal and food therapies that can have a positive effect of GI physiology.
Probiotics and Prebiotics- More than you know: 14. Define the function of probiotics, prebiotics, vitamins and SCFA’s in the lower GI. 15. Evaluate the research on various strains of probiotics and function. 16. List foods that are prebiotics and contain SCFA with symptom and function improvement. 17. Review probiotics science-based evidence in auto-immune, GI and mental health/ brain conditions.Description text goes here

NURSE PRACTITIONERS/ NURSES: This course provides 15 contact hours (1.5 CEU) over three days, 5 hours per day, to fulfill the pharmacotherapeutics/ pharmacology requirements for American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Category 1 Continuing Education Hours for certification renewal. The same hours submitted to renew certification may be submitted to a State Board of Nursing for re-licensure. American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) accepts formally approved continuing education sponsored by organizations accredited or approved by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). .
PHYSICIANS: The AAFP has reviewed Therapeutic Update 2023 and deemed it acceptable for up to 15.00 Live AAFP Prescribed credits. Term of Approval is from 04/27/2023 to 04/29/2023. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed, not as Category 1. CME programs approved by the AAFP are eligible for Category 2 credit (or Category 1-A under special circumstances) through the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS: American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for Prescribed credit from AAFP. Physician assistants may report the number of hours stated above of Category I credit for completing this program.
CONSULTANT PHARMACISTS: Some consultant pharmacist boards accept University Learning Systems courses for recertification either as is or with board approval. Please contact your board regarding course approval and ULS with any questions.
CANADIAN PHARMACISTS: Canadian Council on Continuing Education in Pharmacy (CCCEP) accepts courses accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). This credit is applicable to health professionals who may require pharmacology credit.
CANADIAN PHYSICIANS: Members of the College of Family Physicians of Canada are eligible to receive up to 15 MAINPRO-M1 credits for participation in this activity due to reciprocal agreement with the American Academy of Family Physicians.
