At the conclusion of these programs, the participant should be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast how the treatment of acute, chronic and end-of-life pain syndromes has changed in the past decade.
  2. State three new trends in the pharmacological management of acute and chronic pain syndromes.
  3. Demonstrate via case studies how to effectively use a variety of medication options, dosage delivery systems and routes in managing acute and chronic pain syndromes.
  4. State the definitions and current theories of how tolerance, hyperalgesia and addiction can affect pain management decisions.
  5. List three new pharmacological delivery systems for medications used in treating pain.
  6. State how new delivery systems can assist in managing pain, minimizing adverse effects and improve compliance.
  7. Describe various tamper resistant opioid products on the market and how these products may reduce misuse, abuse and diversion.
  8. Compare and contrast the pharmacological benefits and risks of the following pharmacological options for managing pain:  a) chronic long-term opioid therapy; b) cannabinoids;  c) NSAIDS.
  9. Describe the key features of new recommendations of the FDA and guidelines from national and state organizations / medical boards for pain management.
