At the conclusion of this program, the participant will be able to:

  1. Discuss the various classes of narcotics and any clinical pearls associated with each drug.
  2. Describe an oral pain ladder based on potency.
  3. List evidence-based efficacy outcomes for all medications discussed.
  4. Discuss the recent FDA alerts on acetaminophen and propoxyphene.
  5. Describe the role of analgesic adjunctive agents for patients with chronic pain. Dosage and efficacy will be discussed.
  6. Analyze cases that allow conversion of one narcotic to another.
  7. Discuss practice recommendations concerning the appropriate use of opioid analgesics in chronic pain.
  8. Discuss several examples of pain management agreements between practitioner and patient.
  9. Discuss pain medications where the benefit is not worth the risk of side effects and or addiction.
  10. Review side effects of each drug and describe ways the practitioner can aid in reducing these side effects.
  11. Discuss any new medications that come to market, using the safety, tolerability, efficacy, price and simplicity format (STEPS).
