At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant should be able to:

  • Describe physiologic and common pathophysiologic changes of aging that impact drug therapy.
  • Discuss how to apply age-sensitive principles for medication dosing and management to clinical scenarios.
  • List nine key questions useful for identifying and managing inappropriate polypharmacy (i.e. unnecessary medication use) in the older  adult.
  • Suggest how to apply the nine questions or use the HAT (hyperpharmacotherapy assessment tool) in clinical scenarios to develop a safer, more effective and manageable drug regimen.
  • Describe best practices in treating older adults with common bone diseases, urologic complaints and psychiatric conditions.
