Educational Session: 8:00 am - 1:00 pm
Reamer L. Brushardt, PharmD, PA-C Assistant Professor and Division Director Division of Physician Assistant Studies, College of Health Professions, Live CME Instructor for University Learning Systems

At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

  • Define evidence-based medicine and discuss the rationale for the rapid increase in evidence-based practice.
  • Discuss the five basic steps of applying evidence-based medicine principles into clinical practice.
  • Identify these basic components of evidence-based medicine:  validity, patient expected event rate (PEER), positive predictive value,  negative predictive value, sensitivity, specificity, statistical significance, relative risk reduction (RRR), absolute risk reduction (ARR),   number-need-to-treat (NNT), number-needed-to-harm (NNH), and odds ratio.
  • Utilize knowledge of evidence-based methodology to calculate the absolute risk reduction and number-needed-to-treat given  statistically significant experimental and control event rates.
