Purpose: The purpose of this presentation is to provide a comprehensive review on pain medications by building a pain ladder based on efficacy, safety and cost. Time will be spent discussing non-narcotic agents and adjuvants for pain.

Objectives:

  • Discuss the various classes of narcotics and any clinical pearls associated with each drug.
  • Describe an oral pain ladder based on potency. List evidence-based efficacy outcomes for all medications discussed.
  • Discuss the recent FDA alerts on acetaminophen and propoxyphene.
  • Describe the role of analgesic adjunctive agents for patients with chronic pain. Dosage and efficacy will be discussed.
  • Analyze cases that allow conversion of one narcotic to another.
  • Discuss practice recommendations concerning the appropriate use of opioid analgesics in chronic pain.
  • Discuss several examples of pain management agreements between practitioner and patient.
  • Discuss pain medications where the benefit is not worth the risk of side effects and or addiction.
  • Review side effects of each drug and describe ways the practitioner can aid in reducing these side effects.
