Session 1 – Cardiovascular Risk Reduction in Primary Prevention

At the conclusion of this program, the participant should be able to:



  • Review current JNC 8 guideline recommendations for the management of hypertension in primary prevention patients.
  • Identify changes in the JNC 8 that impact the treatment of hypertension in all patients.
  • Explain the evidence that supports JNC 8 guideline recommendations related to antihypertensive pharmacotherapy.
  • Review current NCEP ATP IV guideline recommendations for the management of dyslipidemia in primary prevention patients.
  • Identify changes in the ATP IV that impact the treatment of dyslipidemia in primary prevention.
  • Explain the evidence that supports ATP IV guideline recommendations related to statin-based lipid lowering pharmacotherapy.
  • Review the USPSTF recommendations for aspirin therapy in primary prevention of CV events.
  • Debate current controversies regarding the lack of evidence supporting aspirin therapy in the primary prevention of CV events.
  • Describe other benefits related to aspirin therapy in primary prevention patients.
  • Identify other treatment strategies to reduce risk of CV events in primary prevention patients.
  • When given a case scenario of a primary prevention patient, provide pharmacotherapy recommendations designed to reduce risk of CV events.
