Associate Director for Science Division of Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) Coordinating Office of Terrorism Preparedness and Emergency Response Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
Susan E. Gorman, Pharm.D., M.S., DABAT is the Associate Director for Science at the Division of Strategic National Stockpile, Coordinating Office for Terrorism Preparedness and Emergency Response, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As a licensed pharmacist and board-certified clinical toxicologist, her primary roles include oversight of the stockpile formulary and provision of technical and scientific advice on all pharmacological and toxicological issues regarding the stockpile. As part of the SNS, she responded to terrorism events such as 9/11 and the US anthrax attacks, as well as natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina. She participates in numerous intergovernmental working groups on counterterrorism involving radiological, chemical, and biological agents, and is a nationally and internationally recognized speaker on stockpiling for terrorist events and other large scale public health emergencies. Prior to joining CDC in 2000, Dr. Gorman was the Assistant Director for the Georgia Poison Center, and continues to serve as a toxicologist. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Applied Toxicology. Dr. Gorman received her Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from Duquesne University in 1988, her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Maryland in 1991, and completed a postdoctoral residency in Emergency Medicine and Toxicology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2007, Dr. Gorman earned a Master of Science degree in BioSecurity and Disaster Preparedness from the St. Louis University School of Public Health. |

Anita Patel, Pharm.D., M.S. is a Lockheed Martin Contractor assigned to the Division of Strategic National Stockpile’s (SNS) Science Team. Dr. Patel joined LMIT and the CDC in 2004. As a licensed pharmacist she is able to provide assistance on scientific and technical issues pertaining to the stockpile including formulary development. Her focus over the last 2 years has been to develop the SNS pandemic influenza response plan, lead the efforts of pandemic influenza countermeasure procurement and provide subject matter expertise on behalf of the stockpile on all Agency wide pandemic planning efforts. Her subject matter expertise in pandemic preparedness includes countermeasure formulary development, procurement and contracts, scientific logistics, as well as continuity of operations and deployment planning. Dr. Patel’s role at the SNS also includes being a liaison to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) addressing regulatory issues for the Stockpile. Her FDA liaison work focuses on SNS Investigational New Drugs (IND), Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) issues, and formulary product labeling concerns. Dr. Patel received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (PCPS). She completed a two year post-doctoral fellowship program working with Rutgers University and Roche Pharmaceuticals. In 2007, Dr. Patel earned a Master of Science degree in BioSecurity and Disaster Preparedness from the St. Louis University School of Public Health. |

Peggy Piascik is Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Science at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy in Lexington.
She received her B.S. degree in Pharmacy from Ohio Northern University and her Ph.D. in Pharmacology from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. Dr. Piascik has twenty five years of experience in retail and long term care pharmacy. Her areas of teaching expertise include pharmacology, women’s health therapeutics, over-the-counter products including dietary supplements and herbs, communications skills and integrated skills in pharmacy practice. Dr. Piascik has spoken extensively on the topics of new drugs and novel biotechnology agents. She teaches a problem-based elective course in the area of herbal and dietary supplements and co-coordinates an elective course in behavior modification coaching. Dr. Piascik has been awarded the Senior Class Award for Teaching Excellence four times and received the University of Kentucky Alumni Association Great Teacher Award in 1991. She has also received the Innovations in Teaching Award from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy in 1998 and again in 2002. |

Melody Ryan, Pharm.D., MPH, CGP, BCPS received her Pharm.D. and Master’s of Public Health degrees from the University of Kentucky. She completed a pharmacy practice residency at Duke University and a neurosciences fellowship at the University of Kentucky. She holds appointments as Associate Professor in the College of Pharmacy, Division of Pharmacy Practice and Science and at the College of Medicine, Department of Neurology at the University of Kentucky.Her practice site is the neurology clinic at the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. Dr. Ryan earned her certification in geriatric pharmacy in November 1998 and she attained Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist status in 2000. She was named the Rho Chi Society 2006 National Faculty Advisor. Dr. Ryan currently serves as Chair-elect for The Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science Clinical Sciences section of the American Pharmaceutical Association. She is also the Vice-chair of the Neurology/Otorhinolaryngology/Ophthalmology Expert Committee of the United States Pharmacopeia. |

William J. Walsh, Ph.D. Internationally Recognized Expert on Biochemical Imbalances William J. Walsh, Ph.D., is founder and director of research of the Health Research Institute and Pfeiffer Treatment Center in Warrenville, Illinois, a far west suburb of Chicago. For over 30 years, he has directed clinical research on biochemistry and its relation to behavioral and learning disorders, autism spectrum disorders, depression, bipolar, schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Walsh is responsible for the discovery of low metallothionein activity in autism and the development of metallothionein-promotion therapy. He is presently engaged in seven separate autism studies including measurement of mercury, lead, and copper levels in autism brain tissues, abnormalities in hormone chemistry, and several controlled studies of oxidative damage and oxidative stress in autism. Dr. Walsh has authored more than 200 scientific articles and reports and presented HRI’s research findings at the American Psychiatric Association, the U.S. Senate, the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General, the Society of Neuroscience, National Alliance for Mental Illness and the National Institutes of Mental Health. He has received numerous awards, including the “Doctor of the Year” award from the International Schizophrenia Foundation. He has participated in forensics studies studying the relics of the composer Beethoven, and chemical analysis studies of more than 25 well-known serial killers and mass murderers. From 1992-1999, Dr. Walsh served as the nutrition consultant for the basketball championship team of the Chicago Bulls. Dr. Walsh is devoted to educating as many people as he can reach - parents, health care professionals, and doctors - by teaching and explaining the importance of balancing one’s biochemistry with nutrient therapy to treat many neurological disorders and conditions. |
